DESCRIPTION OF OUR SUMMER SESSIONS:
Book Clubs and Read Alouds will be led by myself, Melissa (owner and operator of Caterpillar Children’s Boutique), a 27 year teaching veteran where 20 of those years where intensely working with 1st & 2nd graders growing, building, & developing to become fluent readers and writers in addition to training other teachers to be effective in reading & writing development instruction. Both the Book Club setting & Read Aloud setting will incorporate multiple literacy strategies & techniques that build both fluency and vocabulary development. All parents will need to sign a release of responsibility. We hope to add a “Writer’s Workshop” in the near future!
*Students participating in “Book Club” Cohorts may be dropped off and picked up at the end of the session. Parents whose children are participating in the Read Alouds may shop in our store or enjoy a cup of coffee at Terra Coffee; they need to stay on/near premise during story/craft time and CAN NOT LEAVE THEIR CHILDREN DURING STORY/CRAFT TIME.

In addition to building fluency and discussing vocabulary, students will also be exposed to the “6 Traits of Writing” and learn how strong authors use the 6 traits in their own writings. Book Club activities will incorporate reading, discussion, reflection, written response & written reflection during every meeting. Students will be required to do some reading on their own at home. Students are most challenged when participating in a guided reading setting where they are being exposed to a level of reading that is slightly above their current reading level. In order for your child to feel most comfortable in one of our Book Club settings, make sure that you take into account the level of book that we will be working with and your child’s current fluent reading level. Students will not be forced, but will be encouraged to take turns reading out loud with the group as this is also a very important link in becoming a fluent reader. Keep in mind, I will be leading each session and guiding/assisting students as we progress through each book. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns of where best your child will be placed. Although grade level and reading levels are suggested for each Book Club cohort; there will be exceptions depending on an individuals’ reading abilities. The intent is for this to be a comfortable, safe, & fun environment for each participant. The Book Club setting will have a maximum of 8 students for each cohort and will meet twice a week for 3 weeks. It is permissible for a student to miss any meetings but they will be responsible for keeping up with the assigned/missed reading. There WILL NOT be any adjustments on pricing if a student misses a session of Book Club. Participating students will be responsible for providing & bringing their own book and some type of writing journal/composition book to each session.
*Books & composition books will be provided for a small fee if noted at registration.
*there are family discounts available if multiple children per family are participating.
